"HUMANITY OWES THIS VOW": THE ACTIONS AND INACTION OF POPE PIUS XII DURING THE HOLOCAUST

December 17th, 2024

4:00 PM ET

Our webinars are designed to increase participants’ knowledge of Holocaust history, explore and access classroom-ready content, and support instructional practice to promote student learning and understanding of this complex history and its lasting effect on the world.

Made possible by the generous support of Eileen Ludwig Greenland, Echoes & Reflections is excited to continue its program for Catholic school educators with this learning opportunity focused on the role of the Catholic Church during the Holocaust.

The Catholic Church and in particular, Pope Pius XII, have faced intense scrutiny for their actions, and inaction during the Holocaust. With the opening of the Vatican Archives, new information continues to be uncovered of the role the Catholic Church played in protecting Christians, rescuing Jews, and appeasing the Nazis during the Second World War. Using the famous Christmas Message of 1942 by Pope Pius XII as a guide, join Jesse Tannetta, Director of Holocaust Content & Pedagogy, to examine the role of the Church during the Holocaust to empower students to reflect on the connection between faith, morals, and action.
