EUROPEAN JEWISH LIFE BEFORE THE HOLOCAUST

Our webinars are designed to increase participants’ knowledge of Holocaust history, explore and access classroom-ready content, and support instructional practice to promote student learning and understanding of this complex history and its lasting effect on the world.

When we listen to the life stories of Holocaust survivors still living in Central and Eastern Europe, we find a rich resource for exploring the diversity of Jewish life and culture that existed in Europe before the Holocaust. From 2000 to 2009, Centropa—a historical institute based in Vienna—interviewed over 1200 elderly Jews in 15 Central and Eastern European countries who shared their entire life stories spanning the 20th century. In this webinar, Dr. Lauren Granite, Centropa’s US Education Director, will showcase how Centropa’s database of over 23,000 old photographs, interviews, short multimedia films, thematic websites, and podcasts illustrate the vibrant, diverse Jewish life that the Nazis came very close to wiping out.

This webinar is connected to the Prewar Jewish Life lesson plan on the Echoes & Reflections website.
