Teaching The Children of Willesden Lane with Testimony-Based Resources

This professional development program will present a unique, meaningful and flexible approach for teaching The Children of Willesden Lane books. To prepare teachers to teach the historical context, the session will provide a historical overview of the events leading up to the Kindertransport--rising antisemitism, Nazism and the Kristallnacht Pogrom--to build professional confidence and awareness. It will also present educational content featuring curated audio-visual testimony from survivors and witness of the Holocaust connected to the themes and topics relevant to Lisa Jura's story as retold by her daughter, Mona Golabek. The content is designed to foster cognitive skills, music appreciation, digital skills, SEL aptitudes and to broaden student perspective.

Teachers who join this professional development will:

• Deepen their understanding of the historical context of The Children of Willesden Lane books
• Explore digital educational materials, for teachers and students, through USC Shoah Foundation’s award-winning website IWitness, incorporating testimony from other survivors to extend The Children of Willesden Lane and its themes.
• Learn how to incorporate the aligned resources into curriculum
• Learn how to request a classroom set of the book most appropriate for their grade level
• Receive a certificate of completion that may be used to document in-service credit
